Russia Declares That Hugo Chávez Was Poisoned with a Substance Capable of Causing Cancer

Igor Kirillov, head of the Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defense Troops of the Russian Armed Forces, declared that the former president of Venezuela Hugo Chávez (1999-2013) was poisoned with a special substance capable of causing cancer.

“According to data from Venezuela, this type of substance to poison Chavez was used by Claudia Diaz, who was part of the presidential circle,” Kirillov said.

The Russian representative explained that the lethal liquid in question can cause cancer, as well as several chronic diseases. In addition, he said that it allegedly comes from the United States, which created this type of substance “in violation of international law,” reported the RT portal.

“With the help of US intelligence agencies, (Díaz) left Venezuela and was later transferred to the US to prevent details of her cooperation with US intelligence agencies from becoming public,” Kirillov continued.

It is not the first time that the cause of the death of the former Venezuelan president, which occurred on March 5, 2013, has been discussed. The current president of the country, Nicolás Maduro, declared in July of this year that Washington is involved in the death of Chavez.

Kirillov cited that Venezuelan authorities had discovered that US intelligence services were working on ways to eliminate Chavez since 2002 and were trying to do so through employees of the US embassy in Caracas.

Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías became president of Venezuela in February 1999 and held several terms until his death in 2013. At the end of 2012, he began treatment for cancer that had been diagnosed in 2011.

Claudia Patricia Díaz Guillén is a retired military officer who between 2011 and 2013 was director of the National Treasury Office and the secretary of the Development Fund (Fonden).

She also served as Chavez’s nurse. Her husband, Adrián José Velasquez Figueroa, headed the then president’s security service.

In 2018, Patricia Díaz and her husband were arrested in Spain due to an extradition request presented by the Venezuelan authorities, who accused the couple of illicit enrichment, criminal conspiracy and money laundering.

Díaz Guillén and Velasquez Figueroa were arrested again in December 2020, but this time at the request of the United States. Then, in May 2022, Díaz Guillén was extradited to the North American country.

Claudia Patria Díaz has been under arrest since May 2022 in a prison in West Palm Beach, South Florida, and will face trial on October 17.
