Wyndham Lewis, in his 1937 book, COUNT YOUR DEAD: THEY ARE ALIVE! or A New War in the Making, presents a character, Launcelot—a member of a Club for the financial elite of the City of London, whose conscience is bothered by the contradictory policies and actions of his Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, who is obsessed by the defensive maneuvers of Adolf Hitler who is being aggressively surrounded by Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union.
