Silicon & Charybdis II | McLuhan & Micro

Hello everyone! I'm Clinton, and I've been studying McLuhan heavily for about a year now, trying to wrap my head around cyberspace and the internet, and just how computers as a medium appear as different to different users depending on their level of computer literacy.

My working premise is that for non-programmers, user interfaces hide the real devices, the medium (meta-medium, as Xerox Parc researcher Alan Kay calls it), presenting "applications" as the content. Most of our popular culture and media is geared toward computers as science-fiction devices rather than the real objects that they are, and I believe that it is a cause of much social anxiety that goes unarticulated.

If you've got a few minutes, check out episode two of my web-series [above] detailing McLuhan and Microcomputers!
