Giant Sugary Walled Vagina

The art world recently refined numerous iON&BOb ideas into a single project—Kara Walker’s A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby.

The colossal subtlety combines the concepts of BOb as a black woman, BOb as sphinx, the sugar that iON often mentions, nudity, sexuality and refinement. In this notion sugar is refined from brown to white in a cathedral of sweetness, the Domino Sugar refinery on the waterfront in Brooklyn.

Made from four tons of sugar, A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby is 35 feet high and has mammoth breasts and labia. After the exhibit closes tomorrow, the plant will be torn down. The Domino complex in Brooklyn originally opened in 1856. By 1870, it was processing more than half of the sugar consumed in the United States, was rebuilt in 1882 after a fire, and continued to refine sugar until its doors closed in 2004.

Below, visitors to the exhibit posted their responses on Instagram.
